Carrie McArthur Low
Lately, much of the public conversation has focused on the rising cost of living. While we all feel the pinch in our day-to-day expenses, fewer of us stop to consider how inflation affects larger systems—especially healthcare.
Costs are rising across the board, and hospitals are not immune. Medical equipment and technology are more expensive than ever. Construction costs, which affect renovations and expansions, have also surged. As a result, the funding gap our community must bridge to keep NHH at the forefront of modern care continues to grow.
What many people don’t realize is that, while the provincial government funds hospital operations, capital costs—such as equipment and technology essential to high-quality care—are not typically covered. That’s where the NHH Foundation plays a vital role.
Since 2002, the Foundation has raised more than $88.5 million to help build and equip our hospital. That number is truly extraordinary—and a testament to the generosity of this community.
Most recently, the Exceptional Community, Exceptional Care campaign—the largest in the history of NHH and Northumberland County—raised $26.3 million. These funds are being used to upgrade diagnostic imaging, including replacing the MRI, CT, and Nuclear Medicine camera; expand and modernize the Pharmacy, Laboratory, and Medical Device Reprocessing Department; and build and equip a fourth Operating Room. Many of these projects are now underway or soon to begin. Donors can be assured: their support is being put to excellent use.
Looking ahead, continued investment is critical. State-of-the-art equipment not only enhances patient care—it helps us attract and retain top medical professionals. In today’s competitive healthcare landscape, talented physicians and specialists are drawn to hospitals that offer the equipment and technology they need to provide the best possible care. By investing in NHH, we’re also investing in the people who care for us.
We remain committed to transparency and accountability. As Chair of the Board, I am proud to serve alongside a dedicated group of directors and a talented staff team. Since moving to Northumberland County with my family nearly 20 years ago, and acting as a director on the NHH Foundation Board since 2017, I’ve seen first-hand the tremendous generosity and spirit that define this beautiful community.
NHH is a hospital built by its community, for its community. In a time when many causes are worthy of support, I ask that you continue to support ours—in any way you can. NHH is here for everyone: our families, friends, colleagues, and neighbours. Together, we can ensure it remains strong, well-equipped, and ready to care.
