Establishing an endowment to support an area of continued development can help ensure vital services and excellent care will always be available – care that uses the most modern technology and the most highly-skilled staff.
What is an Endowment?
Endowment funds provide financial strength and stability to allow NHH to offer the very best care to our patients in the future, while creating a permanent legacy in support of the hospital.
Funds given to the endowment program are permanently invested and only a portion of the income is expended annually. For the last several years, the annual distribution to the hospital has been invested in ongoing educational opportunities for NHH staff.
Fast Facts on Endowment
- Named endowment funds are established at a minimum donation of $100,000.
- Endowments are held in perpetuity; only a portion of the investment income earned on the principal is spent.
- Endowment funds can be established and named in honour or in memory of a family member or loved one as a permanent tribute.
- You can direct your gift to a special area of interest (e.g. diagnostic, emergency care, etc.)

Your retirement funds are amongst the most heavily taxed assets you own.
When Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation is designated as a direct beneficiary of a registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) or registered retirement income fund (RRIF), these taxes are offset at the time of death. Your gift will be treated as a charitable donation in the year of death and the Foundation will issue a donation receipt for the full amount transferred.
The gift is simple to make – you name Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation as a direct beneficiary on the plan document and advise the institution holding your retirement account of the change.
A gift of life insurance is a creative way for you to build our long term financial strength without diminishing your own – even a relatively small commitment can provide significant benefits for our hospital.
You may donate a paid-up life insurance policy that has outlived its original purpose by naming Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation the owner and beneficiary and receive an immediate donation receipt for the cash surrender value of the policy.
You may gift an existing policy on which premiums are still being paid by transferring ownership to the Foundation and receiving donation receipts for all future premium payments.
Aeroplan members can donate on-line any number of miles they would like to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation.
